ABBOTTABAD, Pakistan — Capt. (retd.) Safdar, the husband of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, criticized Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari, saying she should not describe people from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as “wild.”
Speaking at a news conference in Abbottabad, Mr. Safdar said people do not refer to communities to which they have married their daughters as “wild.” If the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were “wild,” he said, they would not have family ties with Punjab.
He noted that the Punjab chief minister is a daughter-in-law of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and argued that the province therefore has an important claim on her attention.
Mr. Safdar said Ms. Bukhari was educated and sensible and suggested that she could not have intended such remarks. Describing himself as a son of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he said he would continue to advocate for the province’s rights across Pakistan.
He added that while Punjab had a claim on the chief minister as her home province, “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has an even greater claim” because of her family ties there.
