Deputy Prime Minister and FM Dar Says India Cannot Set Aside Indus Waters Treaty Obligations

Must read

ISLAMABAD — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said Wednesday that India could not disregard its international obligations when they became politically or otherwise inconvenient, arguing that the status of the Indus Waters Treaty had been reaffirmed by a court of arbitration.

Mr. Dar’s remarks underscore Pakistan’s position that the 1960 water-sharing agreement remains legally binding despite disputes between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. He said the treaty’s status had been reaffirmed through international arbitration, reinforcing Islamabad’s contention that its provisions cannot be unilaterally set aside.
