The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ordered the first phase of local government elections in Punjab to be held on February 7.
During a meeting, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja said the Punjab cabinet committee and the ECP had previously discussed holding elections between December 15 and January 15, as proposed by the provincial government.
Punjab Chief Secretary informed the meeting that preparations for the local government elections were complete but requested an additional two months to finalize arrangements.
He said fog could disrupt polling in December and January and that voter turnout tends to be lower during the winter. He requested that elections be scheduled after January 20.
The chief election commissioner accepted the request and directed that the first phase of local government elections in Punjab be held on February 7.
