U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres and Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, warning that strikes targeting civilian sites pose a serious threat to regional security.

The two officials met in New York on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, according to a statement from the GCC Secretariat General.

Guterres and Albudaiwi “strongly condemned” what the statement described as Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia and the deliberate targeting of civilian objects. They said such actions risk further destabilizing the region.

The meeting also focused on cooperation between the United Nations and the GCC, with the officials discussing geopolitical developments, regional conflicts and diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving them.

Guterres also praised the economic and social progress of GCC member states and their contributions to international efforts to promote long-term stability.

The meeting comes as tensions involving the Houthis continue to raise concerns over the security of the Gulf and broader regional stability.
