TEHRAN:

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran, with the Iranian leader calling for closer and more sustained cooperation between the two neighboring countries, Iranian state media reported.

Pezeshkian stressed the need for continued contact between Tehran and Islamabad and called for stronger cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, energy, tourism, investment, culture and science.

Naqvi said Pakistan was committed to expanding bilateral cooperation with Iran across economic, political and social sectors, according to reports of the meeting.

The talks came as Pakistan seeks to maintain close diplomatic engagement with Iran amid wider regional tensions and economic disruption.

Pezeshkian said the two countries could make greater use of their respective human and natural resources to meet domestic and regional needs and encouraged increased investment and institutional contacts.

Naqvi also held talks with Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, with the two sides discussing bilateral relations and regional developments.

Momeni thanked Pakistan’s leadership for what Tehran described as Islamabad’s efforts to promote regional peace and stability.

Pakistan shares a long border with Iran and has sought to expand bilateral trade and economic cooperation while addressing security concerns along the frontier.

The latest meetings also come as Pakistan has sought to maintain diplomatic contacts with multiple parties amid heightened tensions involving Iran and the United States.

Neither side announced a major new agreement following the meeting, and officials’ statements focused primarily on strengthening existing bilateral cooperation.
