WASHINGTON — Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson, speaking to National Public Radio, said the United States had approved the transfer of 40,000 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, describing the scale of the weapons package as unprecedented.
Carlson said the combined destructive force of the munitions would be roughly six times that of the “Little Boy” atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.
The Trump administration is planning a $2.8 billion munitions package that includes 20,000 MK-84 and 20,000 BLU-117 2,000-pound bombs, according to a U.S. official cited by Reuters. The package is to be financed with U.S. funds appropriated for military assistance.
In his NPR interview, Carlson characterized the weapons as effectively being provided to Israel rather than purchased directly by the Israeli government, arguing that the scale of the transfer was difficult to comprehend.
The planned transfer would represent one of the largest recent U.S. shipments of 2,000-pound munitions to Israel.
