Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s parliamentary party will work to secure the withdrawal of emergency measures and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, party chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Gohar said 70 members of the National Assembly and senators attended a joint parliamentary party meeting. Participants reaffirmed their confidence in the party leadership and the two opposition leaders, while also praising Sohail Afridi’s role, he said.
Gohar said the parliamentary party had strongly condemned the imposition of governor’s rule and emergency measures. Members also discussed the political and administrative vacuum that could arise from governor’s rule, he added.
Recommendations from the meeting had been forwarded to the two opposition leaders and would be finalized after their approval, Gohar said. The parliamentary party would then work to have the measures reversed.
He also rejected suggestions that the proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment had featured in the meeting, saying it was neither on the agenda nor discussed. No decision or proposal regarding the amendment had emerged, he added.
Gohar said the party’s position remained clear: controversial legislation should be avoided, as rushed lawmaking could deepen political instability.
On the creation of new provinces, he said no province should be divided without the consent of its people. Any decision to establish new provinces, he added, must reflect public will and command national consensus.
