ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Pakistan plans to secure three liquefied natural gas cargoes from Qatar in October as uncertainty over energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz raises concerns about supplies ahead of the winter season.
The government is also preparing to engage with Iranian authorities to help ensure the safe passage of LNG vessels through the strategic waterway, officials said.
The move comes after QatarEnergy extended a force-majeure period affecting LNG supplies to Pakistan through Nov. 4. Pakistani authorities are concerned that the disruption could persist into the winter, when demand for gas typically increases.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for global energy shipments, and prolonged disruption could add pressure to Pakistan’s already constrained energy supply and increase the risks surrounding winter fuel availability.
