ISLAMABAD: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has registered a case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President and National Assembly member Junaid Akbar under Sections 9, 10 and 11 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
According to the first information report (FIR), the case relates to remarks allegedly made by Akbar in which he referred to turning Islamabad into “Somnath” during a speech ahead of PTI’s planned September 27 protest in the capital. The FIR alleges that the remarks, circulated through social media, could create fear and insecurity and pose risks to public and government property.
The FIR further alleges that material shared through Akbar’s official TikTok account contained threatening and inflammatory content. It states that the account had approximately 339,500 followers, giving the material a significant public reach.
Akbar subsequently sought to clarify his remarks, saying the reference to Somnath had been made in the context of PTI repeatedly returning to Islamabad. He maintained that his comments had been given a “wrong spin” and said the party remained committed to peaceful and constitutional means of protest.
The case was registered at the NCCIA Cyber Crime Reporting Centre in Islamabad on September 23, with FIR No. 152/2026 filed on behalf of the state. The development comes amid preparations for PTI’s planned September 27 protest in Islamabad.
The case has brought renewed attention to the legal boundaries surrounding political speech, social-media statements and calls for political protest, with the legal implications of the allegations now subject to investigation and any subsequent judicial proceedings.
