WASHINGTON/NEW YORK — U.S. President Donald Trump shared a video of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s address to the United Nations General Assembly, drawing renewed attention to Islamabad’s account of its military confrontation with India.
In the speech, Mr. Sharif said India had attacked Pakistan after promoting what he described as a false narrative against his country. He said Pakistan responded in self-defense under the leadership of Field Marshal Asim Munir and claimed that the response delivered a lesson India would not forget.
Mr. Trump’s decision to share the remarks on social media came as tensions over the Pakistan-India confrontation remained a prominent issue in diplomatic discussions surrounding the U.N. General Assembly.
The Pakistani prime minister’s comments represent Islamabad’s position on the conflict; India has disputed Pakistan’s account of the confrontation and the circumstances surrounding the fighting.
